TransCanada Corp. is seeking regulatory approval to begin construction of a pipeline that would help feed a proposed liquefied natural gas export terminal on B.C.'s north coast even though a final decision has not yet been made whether to build the terminal.
The Calgary-based company has conditional federal and provincial approvals for the North Montney Mainline, but they are subject to a positive financial investment decision for the proposed Pacific Northwest LNG project on Lelu Island near Prince Rupert, B.C.
TransCanada says the modified proposal filed with the National Energy Board would allow it to move forward with construction of the majority of its North Montney Mainline project at a cost of $1.4 billion ahead of that decision.
The proposed NMML project would include 301 kilometres of pipeline and related facilities that will connect with an existing pipe about 35 kilometres southwest of Fort St. John, B.C.
The LNG terminal is primarily backed by Malaysia's national oil and gas company, Petronas, which has yet to make a final investment decision for the Pacific Northwest LNG project.
TransCanada says that it's seeking regulatory approvals that would allow it to begin construction on the pipeline in the first half of 2018 and bring it into service over a two-year period beginning in April 2019.

This enables Fracking Disasters. TCP was gifted Line 1 through Northern Ontario, taxpayer funded built by the Northern Ontario Crown [1957] Pipeline Corporation then leased to Trans Canada Pipelines. They have no moral compass, there are Feeder lines so deteriorated that they have turned the operating pressure down to avoid pipe bursts. Over 30% of Ontario has never been serviced with N/G, 60 year's later.
On Energy Poverty www.ontarioruralgrowth.ca as well as all the communities on Lake Superiors North Shore Eg. a Feeder line South of Longlac down the plateau to Terrace Bay. Jellico which has been host to a TCP COMPRESSOR STATION for 60 year's, still no N/G service. Their Klotz Lake Compressor Station could have had a Feeder line run South through Caramel, Manitouwadge to the Hemlo Gold Field and then West to Marathon and Pic River First Nation. From Manitouwadge Corner it could also run East to Mobert First Nation and White River. Hornepayne, Chapleau, Wawa could also be served with lines running South from the Highway 11 Pipeline Corridor.
TCP should pony up and take care of Canada's backyard or have their Charter Revoked. With the 20 plus LNG Export Terminals planned for BC's West Coast that will destroy the farmland of BC and Alberta. These stories make me ashamed to be a Canadian. I and several hundred men suffer Toxic Fume Injury from a greedy Pulp Mill owner that threatened to go Non Union. 59 of us were on oxygen at the local Hospital my last day of work. Now vehicle exhaust causes the same symptoms. Thanks to Corporate Greed enabled by the illusion that the AER is a Regulator when all they are is a pathetic Fox Theatre which is Industry funded and Self Regulated.
