Alberta government mail stolen from van

The RCMP is investigating after Alberta government mail was stolen from a van last month, Service Alberta said on Thursday.

In a statement, the provincial department said the theft initially targeted the van of a private courier which was en route to deliver mail in Red Deer on June 23. The van was later recovered, but its contents—incoming and outgoing government mail—was missing.

The department said the mail may have contained personal information and it contacted the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner immediately after the theft occurred.

"Departments are in the process of contacting Albertans whose information might have been affected," said the statement. "Anyone who sent mail in the Red Deer area to the provincial government through Canada Post in the days before June 23 is asked to call the department involved to ensure items were received."

The government has also notified its couriers to review security procedures with their drivers.
