We are looking for an experienced digital sales and marketing whiz to join our dedicated team of journalists in Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver, to build a strong news organization that reports the truth and funds some of the most important stories of our time. This is a senior-level position in Observer Media Group's organizational structure.

About The Position

The Digital Marketing & Subscription Manager position requires someone with vision, strategy, intensity, focus, and a commitment to success to join our dynamic team.

As a gifted relationship builder and communicator, you bring a successful track record in creating innovative online supporter engagement campaigns that have resulted in increased revenue for an organization.

Responsibilities

  • Meeting ambitious weekly targets to grow paying subscriber base
  • Define, develop and oversee execution of National Observer’s digital marketing vision and strategy in collaboration with the CEO
  • Create, build and maintain digital expertise (web, social, mobile, etc.) in partnership with web developers and designers to optimize National Observer’s website and subscriber growth;
  • Together with the editorial team, plan and implement social media campaigns and crowdfunding campaigns to grow readership, reach new subscribers and increase revenue;
  • Create a distinct, cohesive voice across platforms for National Observer sales, subscription, advertising and marketing;
  • Establish, maintain and report on key performance indicators relevant to digital marketing programs;
  • Take a lead role in educating stakeholders about best practices and emerging trends pertaining to digital optimization, content strategy, SEO, social media and digital advertising;
  • Become one of National Observers key brand ambassadors, immersing yourself in National Observer stories, the challenges of journalism and National Observer’s solutions; and
  • Act as the primary point of contact for the government, universities and business subscribers.

Required experience, skills and knowledge include:

  • 3-5 years work experience in managing digital campaigns (online brand management, fundraising and/or sales); journalism experience a huge plus
  • Proven track record in successfully launching digital and social media campaigns (e.g. how you went from 0 to 20k+ followers or website visitors);
  • Familiarity with photo and video editing tools for social media ;
  • Capacity to quickly navigate the changing digital landscape;
  • Exceptional and established leadership skills including strategic capability, attention to detail, and the ability to set priorities and maintain focus;
  • Self-motivated, ambitious, high achiever, entrepreneurial mindset, and the ability to work with ambiguity;
  • Knowledgeable in digital marketing strategies and tools such as SEO and Google Analytics;
  • Must demonstrate excellent business judgment/instincts balanced by an understanding of the role and importance of sales measurement; and
  • Knowledge of the Canadian media landscape with a passion for creating a sustainable future for quality reporting and investigative journalism.
