1. You set your target on Kickstarter at the bare minimum dollars you need to execute the project.

2. You ask everyone you know to pledge. You ask and ask and ask. You ask so many times that those who know you can't believe you're still asking.

3. You suffer sleep-deprivation. If you don't get there, you know you don't get any of the money pledged.

For us, today, that's more than $37,000. Nearly $17,000 of that has come directly through Kickstarter, through people from all over the world. The remainder has come from our readers. But we need another $23,000 to get any of the funds.

That's a big mountain to climb in 17 days, but with your support, we can do it.

If we achieve our goal, it's a win-win. You get great reporting, some of the best in Canada, and we get to execute on a project that we are absolutely passionate about.

National Observer has the strongest environmental reporting team in Canada and one of the strongest investigative reporting teams. As a publication, our commitment to this issue is absolute. We'll go all the way to bring stories to you, leaning into daunting situations without backing down if we know there's something that the public must know.

Please pledge today and help build the future of investigative journalism in Canada.

Then there's Number 5. You create a list of rewards to thank people for pledging. Ours include a trip to the Great Bear Rainforest, original artwork, consulting, and much more. Here are a couple to consider...

A $25 pledge gets you a stunning digital download of this bear. $30 gets you your very own spirit bear poster captured by our favourite junior photographer, Sophie Wright, who was 12-years-old at the time.

$50 gets you a National Observer Climate Man Coffee Cup

Life is too short to drink from a boring coffee cup — pledge $50 or more and make your cubicle colleagues jealous as you drink your morning java in a caricatured Climate Man coffee cup, featuring an original design by renowned New Jersey artist Victor Juhasz. Climate Man, torn between two starkly contrasting climate realities, was created for National Observer in 2016 for the Race Against Climate Change Kickstarter campaign.
