Are you a journalist with experience covering Indigenous communities?

National Observer is seeking a reporter to lead a special reporting project on Indigenous issues, producing in-depth multi-media reports on:

  • People and communities

  • Progress responding to calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

  • Economic innovation

The candidate must be an excellent storyteller with strong investigative reporting skills.

Ideally, the reporter will work out of our Vancouver office and be available to travel within British Columbia.

Qualities we value: Collaborative, excellent communicator, takes feedback well, energetic, dedicated, does well with complexity and challenge. Passionate about journalism and language.

Familiarity with photo and video editing tools and social media a plus.

National Observer has a proven track record of quality investigative journalism. Were are the first online-only newspaper to win a National Newspaper Award (2017), and have recently won an award for investigative journalism from the Canadian Association of Journalists and four Canadian Online Publishing Awards.

National Observer’s award-winning coverage centres on climate, energy, environment and politics, with regular features on First Nations, refugee and human rights issues.

Compensation: Commensurate with Experience

Starts in September. Eight month contract with possibility of becoming full-time employee at end of term.
