I started this job during an election in which a critical question was barely being asked: what happens to Canada’s environment — and to efforts to fight climate change and revolutionize our energy systems — when parties are tripping over one another to promise new pipelines?

We have done everything we can to keep the energy transition on the agenda throughout the election, as well as delivering on our commitments to report on the far-right, to fact-check misinformation, to study climate solutions and analyze the politics driving it all. Now the next phase begins.

It's easy to feel a sense of complacency after an election, when the hard work of sorting through campaign promises, or even getting directly involved, is over. The uncertainty is over. But this is precisely when the work of governance begins and when there’s the greatest need for accountability; it's when promises are put to the test and when the details matter most. This is when decisions are made that will shape our future.

For a decade, Canada's National Observer has revealed what happens after the cameras turn away. Now, as we celebrate our 10th anniversary, our commitment to holding power accountable is more vital than ever. We will be tracking the promises, investigating the new government’s early actions, analyzing energy and climate plans — and ensuring that climate commitments translate into real action.

But we can't do it alone. Sustained, independent reporting requires resources. It requires the support of readers like you who understand the importance of accountability journalism, especially during this post-election period when other media attention shifts elsewhere.

What's at stake? If no one is watching, those climate commitments could be diluted or forgotten. If no one is digging, critical information could be suppressed or manipulated. And if no one is holding power accountable, we risk losing the very future we were promised.

Canada's National Observer has spent a decade revealing what's really happening – exposing greenwashing, sparking policy change and delivering the truth about our climate future. As climate facts are erased and disinformation flourishes, our democracy faces a critical threat. Your donation to the Climate Solutions Reporting Project helps produce and preserve the information Canadians need. Help us reach our $150,000 goal by May 22 so we can continue holding power accountable when it matters most.
