Head of Communications
For more than a decade, Observer Media Group has led the digital re-invention of Canadian media on a national level, driven the Canadian conversation on energy and climate change, and made history as the first all-digital publication to win a National Newspaper Award and two prestigious Michener Award citations. Our Democracy and Integrity Reporting Project has placed us at the centre of Canada’s battle against online misinformation and electoral manipulation. Observer Media Group is the parent company of Canada's National Observer.
Canada's National Observer publishes investigative reporting, in-depth analysis, solutions journalism, multimedia features, opinion and daily news coverage. We cover success and innovation, particularly in the area of slowing global warming. Our reporting ensures that decision makers and members of the public have the Canadian story on the intersection of climate change, technology, culture and politics in order to make informed choices. Other areas of key coverage: toxics, food security, youth, environmental justice and Indigenous leadership.
Now we are growing our executive team and seek a Head of Communications to lead our newsletter, development and engagement campaigns at Canada’s National Observer at Observer Media Group. This is a position for a superb writer ideally with a background as a professional in communications and journalism, or with experience working for a mission-driven organization.
This is a management position. You will be employed in a confidential capacity in matters relating to industrial relations.

And you will shine a bright light on what is exceptional and unique about the work we’re publishing every day. You will actively inspire readers to share and support this journalism, and to become loyal members of our growing community across Canada.
With masses of email flooding people’s inboxes, your newsletters will be habit-forming. A key way you will build readership and loyalty is by referring to the data: actively reviewing analytics to assess newsletter performance and A/B test subject lines and headlines.

You know how to craft a first sentence to bring a story to life with punchy, direct prose. You can take a complex topic and simplify it so that it is more accessible to a popular audience. And, hey, finding the right active verb matters to you just as much as fact-checking and redrafting and brainstorming over the very best subject line which will convince busy people to open the newsletter.
