The Alberta NDP are hosting their largest-ever convention in Calgary this weekend as the province reels from its slumping economy and the aftermath of the Fort McMurray wildfire.
Members of Alberta's Wildrose Opposition compared the NDP government's carbon tax to a famine caused by Soviet government policies in Ukraine during the 1930s that killed millions of people.
"We didn't have a respectful tone yesterday. We express regret for how things unfolded. The intention was never to embarrass the (Alberta) premier or the premier of Ontario."
It's considered to be the largest fire evacuation in Alberta history. The entire city of Fort McMurray, in the heart of the province's oil sands region, was evacuated due to a raging wildfire.
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley used a provincewide TV address Thursday to deliver one of her strongest statements to date on the need for new pipelines, saying Alberta’s fate is Canada’s fate.
