Sonal Gupta
Sonal Gupta is a journalist and documentary producer who currently covers urban Indigenous communities in and around Ottawa thanks to a grant from the Local Journalism Initiative and the Government of Canada.
With a Master’s in Journalism from the University of British Columbia, she has produced for The Tyee, Mongabay, among others covering food security, environmental sustainability, and marginalized communities.
She co-authored the Empowerment Journalism Guide with the Global Reporting Centre, which won the Gold Anthem Award for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in 2024. Sonal’s work earned recognition, including a finalist position for the 2023 Canadian Association of Journalists’ Student Award. She has also won the Jack Webster Student Journalism Award (2022) and a Gold Award for COPA Best Academic Video Content (2022).
