Join our year-end fundraising campaign to raise $125,000 by Dec. 31 to support groundbreaking public-interest journalism on climate in Canada
For over a decade, CNO has been the trusted source you’ve depended on to drive Canada’s conversation on the climate crisis forward. Our award-winning journalism has informed citizens, sparked change in energy policy and swayed the hearts and minds of thousands on crucial issues shaping our country’s future.
The work we are doing has made a profound difference in the climate conversation in Canada. This is why it’s so essential we continue growing this important work.
Your support is an investment in Canada’s National Observer’s future capacity to grow our impact in 2024. We will:
- Deepen our coverage of urgent climate solutions that give us a path forward.
- Uncover disinformation and misinformation clouding the climate discourse and slowing needed action.
- Break critical stories that hold corporations and governments accountable to our climate targets.
- Expand and strengthen the reach of our journalism on channels that include new podcast series, new newsletters, social media, and a coming mobile app.
It’s been said before and it bears repeating again: Canada is one of the toughest media environments in the world to keep a news business alive. This year brought formidable challenges we never expected to face.
Independent Canadian media companies became collateral damage in the showdown between Big Tech and the federal government. Meta banned Canadians from accessing credible new sources on their platforms and Google is threatening to follow suit. Misinformation on social media has only gotten worse in response.
Layoffs and newsroom closures have whittled the Canadian journalism industry down to a shadow of its former self — so much so, that I fear journalism’s role as a watchdog for democracy is under serious threat.
But here’s the good part: Against stacked odds, CNO perseveres year after year to have an outsized impact in Canada — thanks to people like you who support us.
From wildfires to the carbon tax, CNO has been here for readers like you each step of the way, reliably informing you about the climate issues that impact our lives. We want to continue being the steady calm in the storm of misinformation you can count on and trust.
So will you double down on your support for Canada’s National Observer and make a financial contribution today? Your donation fuels CNO's mission to keep Canadians and decision-makers armed with the news they need to make sense of this urgent moment.
I’m going to put it bluntly: If you want news media to persist in Canada, you are going to have to pay for it. With your help, we will drive the climate conversation forward by covering urgent climate solutions, uncovering disinformation and breaking critical stories that hold corporations and governments accountable.
Please consider making a significant donation to our year-end fundraising campaign and help us meet our goal of $125,000 by Dec. 31 to help support our essential journalism.
