Before joining the Pembina Institute, Binnu served as an asset management strategy developer for TransAlta's renewable generation, in which role she helped develop a strategy for maintaining critical assets in the hydro-electric fleet, facilitated workshops with operations, maintenance and engineering staff to conduct analyses of risks and system failures, and evaluated the risks with flood management structures. Throughout the years, she has worked with Transalta in its offices in Alberta, Ontario and Mexico.

Through Engineers Without Borders, she also worked as a consultant to the Ghanaian government, addressing systemic issues with government effectiveness and citizen empowerment. In working with different municipalities, she has also honed her skills in assessing client needs, building and managing relationships, and managing deliverables for different stakeholders. Binnu has also conducted research and detailed analysis with Defence Research and Development Canada and Alstom Power (Switzerland).
