Veterans and serving members of the Forces joined 35,000 Canadians taking part in the National War Memorial in Ottawa to honour Canadians who died for their country.

Sheila Anderson of Yellowknife, the Silver Cross mother representing all mothers who have lost children in military service, placed a wreath at the National War Memorial. She had lost her son, Cpl. Jordan Anderson, in Afghanistan in 2009.

"I'm going to be thinking about all the families, the mothers, the fathers, the brothers and sisters, and the spouses of the fallen soldiers," she told CBC News on Wednesday.

"Members of our Armed Forces — past and present — routinely put their lives on the line for our country," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement. "They represent the very best of what it means to be Canadian."

After the ceremony, the carillon bells rang from Parliament Hill's Peace Tower, and Canadians placed their poppies on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
