Dr. Christian Burgsmüller has been the Chargé d’affaires a.i. and Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Canada since August 2020. Dr. Burgsmüller is a career diplomat with the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU’s diplomatic service. Between 2014 and 2019, he served as Member of Cabinet (Private Office) of former European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, with responsibility for the U.S., Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. His previous diplomatic postings include assignments as Head of the Global Issues and Innovation Section of the Delegation of the European Union to the U.S. (2010-2014) and as Head of Political and Public Affairs Section of the Delegation of the European Union to Brazil (2006-2010). A lawyer by training with a Ph.D. in constitutional law from the University of Cologne, Dr. Burgsmüller joined European institutions in Brussels in 2000.

Dr. Burgsmüller is married with two children.
