About Xavier Richer Vis

Xavier is a Toronto-based journalist and newsroom coder with the Investigative Journalism Foundation. He first joined the IJF as a data-scraping volunteer and was a member of the IJF’s first cohort of summer reporters. A graduate of McGill University and Goldsmiths, University of London’s masters in computational journalism program, his work has also appeared in Wired.

Investigation: Big Oil’s most powerful lobby group held more meetings with feds in 2020 than any other year on record

In the decade before the pandemic, representatives of Canada's biggest oil and gas lobby averaged 117 meetings with government officials each year. In 2020, that number hit an all-time high of 269 — more meetings than there were business days in the year.
