Canada and nearly 200 other countries around the world now have eight years to set aside almost one-third of their land and marine territories for conservation under a landmark new biodiversity deal reached in Montreal on Monday, December 19, 2022.

Environment ministers from around the world are gathering in Montreal for the last few days of a conference aimed at preserving what's left of the planet's biodiversity.

The United Nations' development program is calling on rich countries and financial institutions in them to do more to help alleviate a growing debt crisis faced by the world’s poorest countries, including by writing off debts — not just rescheduling them.

Rich countries including the European Union and the United States have pushed back against efforts to put financial help for poor nations suffering the devastating effects of global warming firmly on the agenda for this year’s U.N. climate summit.

Only about half the funds required are being provided by rich countries, according to a report by Oxfam.
