Premier John Horgan says successive B.C. governments have budgeted "laughable" amounts of money to fight wildfires that are becoming all too common through the ravages of climate change.

That afternoon we stood on her roof watching a cloud of smoke from a distant fire, grow closer, and the firefighters’ helicopters and planes began to fly right over her house, to refill with water from Kokkina Limonaki, writes Cate Whittemore. She called a neighbour who lived in the direction of the smoke, to offer her refuge.

Last summer in B.C., 190 homes and nearly 250 other buildings were completely destroyed by wildfires in both the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and the Cariboo Regional District. To reduce losses like this in the future, there are things people can do to make their homes safer if a wildfire strikes.
